FAQ's

What is EV Shift?

EV Shift is a Southern California Edison (SCE) managed charging program powered by ev.energy.

It brings together two SCE programs — the SIDER program (Stability Improvements with DERs) and the Flexible Pricing Rate Pilot — to reward SCE EV drivers for smart charging. By participating, your car's charging is optimized to align with the grid's needs, and you earn incentives for doing so.

I received an email inviting me to join — why was I contacted?

You were invited because we identified you as an SCE customer who is already using the ev.energy app and may be eligible for the EV Shift program.

You received this email because we believe you could benefit from earning incentives through smart charging. All you need to do is log in and complete a short utility verification step.

What is the LEAP flow, and why do I need to complete it?

LEAP is a secure third-party utility connection tool. Completing the LEAP flow links your SCE utility account to your ev.energy account, allowing us to confirm your account number, rate plan (tariff), and other details needed to verify your eligibility for EV Shift.

This is a required step for all participants and is the first step toward earning the $50 sign-up incentive.

The process involves logging in with your SCE credentials and accepting terms that authorize ev.energy to access your utility data.

How do I find out if I'm eligible?

Completing the LEAP flow is how we check. It connects your SCE utility account to ev.energy so we can review your details and submit them to SCE for verification.

The process typically takes 1–4 weeks, and we'll notify you once your eligibility is confirmed. You will be notified once a decision is made.

In the meantime, you’ll be able to smart charge with ev.energy once you complete onboarding. You may have received an email because we believe you could benefit from earning incentives through smart charging. If so, you were invited because we identified you as an SCE customer who is already using the ev.energy app and may be eligible for the EV Shift program.

How do I sign up?

Log in to your ev.energy account and navigate to the sign-up link: web.ev.energy/sce/sign-up

This link will take you through web onboarding and the LEAP flow.

Since you're already an ev.energy user, you'll simply log in with your existing ev.energy credentials and complete the LEAP portion.

What incentives can I earn? Suggest adding info here about bill credits

There are three types of incentives available to eligible SCE customers:

  • $50 sign-up incentive — Earned once you connect compatible EV hardware, complete the LEAP flow, and complete your first smart charging session of a minimum of 1kWh consumption.
  • $10/month (SIDER) — Earned monthly when you complete at least 5 smart charging sessions (min. 1 kWh each), for SIDER-eligible users.
  • $10/month (Flexible Pricing Rate Pilot) — Earned monthly when you complete at least 5 smart charging sessions (min. 1 kWh each), for Flexible Pricing Rate Pilot-eligible users.

If you're eligible for both programs, you can earn up to $20/month in ongoing incentives. Payments are made via Venmo or PayPal.

Boost sessions do not count toward smart charging sessions.

If you’re eligible for the Flexible Pricing Rate Pilot, you may also receive annual bill credits from SCE for optimizing your charging according to the dynamic signal.

What is smart charging?

A smart charge is when ev.energy automatically manages your EV's charging to align with grid conditions or dynamic pricing signals from SCE.

This may involve scheduling your charging to off-peak hours or responding to grid events. Smart charging is enabled by default for all EV Shift participants.

What equipment do I need to participate?

You need a smart-charging compatible EV or home charger (EVSE). Standard vehicle and charger compatibility applies — the same hardware that works with ev.energy's other programs will work here. Check the Charging tab on this FAQ for a detailed list of compatible hardware.

If your vehicle only supports passive (non-controllable) charging and you don't have a compatible EVSE, you may not be eligible for certain tiers.

Which tier will I be placed in?

You don't choose your tier — ev.energy and SCE determine your tier based on your eligibility after the LEAP flow verification is complete.

All participants start in the default EV Shift tier. You may then be moved into the SIDER program, the Flexible Pricing Rate Pilot, or both, depending on your eligibility.

How long does it take to find out if I'm eligible?

After you complete the LEAP flow, ev.energy will pre-review your information. If we believe you're likely eligible, we'll submit your details to SCE.

SCE's final verification can take anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks. We'll notify you once your eligibility has been confirmed and you've been moved into a program tier.

What if I'm not eligible?

After you complete the LEAP flow, ev.energy will pre-review your information. If we believe you're likely eligible, we'll submit your details to SCE.

SCE's final verification can take anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks. We'll notify you once your eligibility has been confirmed and you've been moved into a program tier.

I was previously rejected from the CPA program. Does that affect my eligibility here?

No — being rejected from CPA does not disqualify you from EV Shift. In fact, you are receiving this invitation specifically because you're an SCE customer. The eligibility criteria for EV Shift are different from those for CPA.

How do I earn bill credits?

Under the SCE Flexible Pricing Rate Pilot, you earn bill credits by shifting your energy usage to lower-cost hours — with savings calculated via a "shadow bill". Each month, your energy usage under the pilot is tracked through a shadow bill, which shows what you would have paid using the Flexible Pricing Rate. This pilot is risk free, and you won’t be charged extra if the cost of charging increases on the dynamic signal. After you complete the LEAP flow, ev.energy will pre-review your information. If we believe you're likely eligible, we'll submit your details to SCE.

When will I get these bill credits?

After 12 billing cycles, your actual payments are compared to your shadow bill. If the shadow bill is lower, you receive a credit from SCE for the difference.

What if I am on a NEM or SBP rate?

Net Energy Metering (NEM) or Solar Billing Plan (SBP) customers are eligible to participate in the SCE Flexible Pricing Rate Pilot program.

Customers on NEM or the SBP will receive any refund at the end of their relevant billing period—even if it’s before the 12-month mark.

I have solar panels at home — can I use them to charge my EV through the ev.energy app?

Yes. If you have home solar panels, the ev.energy app offers three solar charging modes — though which ones you can access depends on your hardware setup.

Net Energy Metering (NEM) or Solar Billing Plan (SBP) customers are eligible to participate in the SCE Flexible Pricing Rate Pilot program.

  • Solar & Grid — Available to all users. The app schedules your charging to take advantage of times when your solar panels are producing energy, blending solar and off-peak grid power to make your overall charging cost cheaper. This works with any integrated car or charger.
  • Solar Only — Available if you have an integrated Tesla EV or a solar-compatible home charger (EVSE). The app adapts your charge rate in real time to match exactly how much excess solar your panels are producing during the day, so no grid energy is imported while the sun is shining.
  • Solar Smart — Also requires a Tesla or solar-compatible EVSE. This is the most comprehensive mode: it charges with solar during the day (like Solar Only), and then automatically tops up with cheap, low-carbon grid energy overnight if needed to reach your target charge level by your ready-by time. It is the cheapest and greenest way to charge your EV.

You don't need to connect your solar inverter to use any of these modes — the app uses a solar irradiance forecast to plan ahead. Connecting an inverter is optional and can provide a slightly more accurate view of live solar production, but it's not required.

What is the PG&E Hourly Flex Pricing Pilot?

  • Optional Binding Mandatory Curtailment, Scheduled Load Reduction Program
  • Any supply-side Demand Response programs or event-based load-modifying programs
Is my Community Choice Aggregator (CCA) participating?

If you are a Community Choice Aggregator (CCA) customer, your CCA must participate in the pilot for you to be approved to enroll. Participating CCAs include:

  • Ava Community Energy
  • Central Coast Community Energy (3CE)
  • CleanPowerSF
  • MCE
  • Peninsula Clean Energy
  • San José Clean Energy
  • Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE)
  • Valley Clean Energy (VCE)
How does Hourly Flex Pricing work?

In this pilot, energy prices will vary by-hour based on supply and demand on the grid. PG&E will forecast energy prices 7 days in advance and publish them on their website. Final prices are set one day in advance by 4 p.m. On Flex Alert Days, prices are set by 6 p.m.

While we will make sure to always charge at the cheapest cost available, the prices can be higher on extreme weather days or when the overall electricity demand increases. Note: You will never pay more for your EV charging, this is a no-risk pilot where in a worse case scenario you would earn zero bill credits.

Will participating in HFP cost me more for charging?

Enrollment in the pilot is risk-free financially. Billing is based on your current rate plan and you will receive a credit for the difference if you would have paid less on Hourly Flex Pricing.

As you participate, you will continue to pay your regular PG&E bills as your normally would.

After 12 months and 24 months of participation, if your EV charging on hourly pricing was cheaper than what you paid on your current rate, you will receive a one-time annual lump sum bill credit from PG&E. Otherwise, your bill credit will be zero and you will not have to pay the difference.

What happens at the end of the HFP pilot?

After the pilot ends December 31, 2027, no action is required, your current rate plan remains unchanged.

You can continue to earn exclusive incentives from ev.energy in other ways once your participation in the HFP pilot concludes. Ahead of the end of the pilot ev.energy will send you information via email, push notification and in-app-messages to guide you through the transition to ev.energy incentives.

How do I unenroll from the HFP pilot?

While we encourage participation for the duration of the pilot (3 years), you can unenroll at any time

If you would like to unenroll from the pilot, please email us at pgehourlyflex@ev.energy.

Which EV models and chargers are compatible with ev.energy?

Supported Chargers

Please note that certain makes and models require an active connected services subscription.  If you don’t see your EV or charger, please reach out to us! We’ll add you to the waitlist and be in touch if the integration becomes available.

What if I need to charge right away?

If you need to charge your EV urgently, and want to bypass smart charging optimized for the HFP pilot or ev.energy incentives, you can simply tap the ‘Boost’ button anytime within the Dashboard tab.

Why does my EV start charging as soon as I plug in?

The ev.energy app will shift charging predominantly to off-peak hours when you have the smart schedule set up, however a small burst of energy may be delivered to your vehicle when you first plug in until the app polls the EV or charger to schedule the charge. If you would like to prevent this, open the app immediately after you plug your vehicle in. This action will trigger the app to poll your EV or charger right away.

Why do I need a connected services subscription?

For us to smart charge your vehicle, we need to communicate to send start/stop charge commands. This is done through the vehicle telematics, however some manufacturers require a subscription to allow us access to their data. Should you have any questions regarding your subscription, please contact your EV manufacturer directly.

I couldn’t pair my Tesla to smart charge. Is this normal?

Under certain circumstances, Teslas or Tesla models can take up to 12 hours to pair the virtual key. If it is outside the 12 hours and you still cannot pair, please reach out to our support team a supportt@ev.energy

What is a charging “event”? How will I know when one is starting?

ev.energy charging events are triggered when there is little to no carbon on the electric grid. When this happens, a push notification is sent to your mobile device notifying you to plug-in your vehicle so it can automatically charge during the specified event time.
